The Reality Of The Lowrey Road LZs

January 17, 2013 By andysmisc Leave a Comment

This is a post not in response to RM, but to everyone who is concerned about putting your glider into challenging LZs.

Yesterday, I landed 45 miles out from St. John, bombing out cause I didn’t go into scramble mode seriously enough when I got low.  Below are some Google Earth shots of the LZ I landed in.

The first image shows the LZ looking east with Red Bank in the distance.  Here’s a link to the image.  For some reason, I can’t embed images in this post.

LZ from a distance

The Lzs in this area are oriented/elongated in an east/west direction.  Normally, the surface wind will be south to southeast which sets you up for a cross wind landing.  However, before I threw my streamer, the wind seemed to be blowing 90 degrees to the road, or straight across the elongated orientation. read more

The Basics Of How To Team Fly

January 17, 2013 By andysmisc Leave a Comment

Here’s some of the strategies we follow.

– Get in line one right behind the other when it’s time to launch.  If one person is a better climber, he should launch second.  The reason for this is because the second guy off will be able to climb to the top of the lift faster than the slower climber… who launched first and is waiting at the top of the lift for the second guy.  This will give you a quicker departure over the back.

– Spread out when gliding.  If one guy follows the other, you’re defeating the purpose of flying as a team. read more

Team Flying: The First Steps To Take

January 17, 2013 By andysmisc Leave a Comment

Find someone in your area or group of pilots who has similar climbing skills as you. Doesn’t matter if you are just starting to go XC. Someone with similar skills and who also has a glider with similar performance.

Talk to them and see if they would be interested in forming a team with you. If they say yes, you’ve gained way more than just doubling your chances of finding lift.

Two of you make it easier to:

– pay for gas
– find a driver
– pay for a driver
– predict the weather
– drive for each other when you can’t find a driver on a really great day
– scout LZs
– gather waypoints
– etc. read more
